2004 Toyota Prius Hybrid

Living on the bleeding edge of technology I have become suspicious of many high tech advances. I wonder if they are ready for prime time or if I am paying to be the "beta-tester" for these innovations.

Such was the question when I first drove the new 2004 Toyota Prius. As the second-generation hybrid vehicle for Toyota, this car is unquestionably the most technologically advanced production vehicle on the road today at any price. This is more than just a geek-mobile for those with pocket protectors at the Earth Day celebration. This is a real car, providing real value and real fun. It truly is ready for prime time in mainstream America.

Don't just take my word for it; the 2004 Toyota Prius is piling up the awards and accolades. Recently automobile journalists at the Detroit Auto Show selected the 2004 Toyota Prius as North American Car of the Year. Motor Trend Magazine bestowed its Car of the Year award and Car and Driver magazine selected the 2004 Toyota Prius as one of the top 10 Best Cars. Maybe that is why most dealers are sold out.

No you don't have to plug it in. New for 2004 is Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive, a combination of gasoline and electric power. Essentially this is a marriage of two separate powerplants designed to work together. The 4cylinder gasoline engine is assisted by an electric motor drawing power from a Nickel-Metal Hydride battery that is constantly being recharged. True horsepower ratings are difficult because of the synergy created between the 76 hp gasoline engine and the 67-hp electric motor increasing usable power. The power is very adequate propelling this 2,890 lb vehicle from zero to 60 mph in around 11 seconds. Even at highway speeds plenty of power is still available to top 100 mph.

Of course the most obvious benefit of the Hybrid Synergy Drive is the estimated EPA city mileage of 60 MPG and highway rating of 51 MPG. Even more impressive than conserving natural resources is the fact that this vehicle produces 90% fewer smog forming emissions than a conventional internal combustion engine and 30% fewer than the previous Prius.

At $19,995 the 2004 Toyota Prius is no cramped stripped down econo-box but is a roomy and comfortable mid-size vehicle only slightly smaller than the Camry. Standard features include anti lock brakes and traction control. Remote keyless entry, heated side mirrors, cruise, power windows and locks are just a few of the standard features.

However for another $5,245 you can select a package of the ultimate Prius options. The voice activated navigation system is one of the best including touch screen, voice input and menus that make finding your way easy. The smart entry and start system lets you keep the transmitter key in your pocket at all times. Just approach the vehicle and touch the door handle to unlock the door. Once inside simply push the start button and you are on your way. Also included in this package are curtain/side impact airbags, JBL 3-in-1 premium audio system with 6-disc CD changer, headlamp leveling and other high-end features. Those with Bluetooth compatible phones can use the hands free features.

It's easy to see why everyone is so excited about this car. Priced between $20,000 and $25,000 the 2004 Toyota Prius has an impressive list of features in a very comfortable mid sized car. Fuel economy and environmentally friendly emissions make this a socially responsible purchase and eligible for the $2,000 clean burning fuel tax deduction.

But is the technology reliable? Prius was first introduced in Japan in 1997 giving Toyota over 7 years of hybrid retail experience. The hybrid related components are warranted by Toyota for 8 years or 100,000 miles indicating trust and reliability of this technology. With a heritage of Toyota quality, this 2004 Prius is sure to be just as reliable as their gasoline products.
