Cute little package, isn't it? No, not me silly, I'm talking about the 2004 Subaru Forester 2.5 XT. Sure, to some the 2004 Forester looks like a tall station wagon. But with a full 7.5 inches of ground clearance and All Wheel Drive the Forester continues to define the term "crossover vehicle". Now with the kick of a turbo charged engine adding 45 extra horses to the power package, the Forester not only has utility, it truly has sport in a cute little package. Weighing in at a trim 3,300 pounds the turbo charged 2.5 Liter Boxer style engine can move from a complete stop to 60 MPH in six seconds. That's fast! With a low center of gravity, you get sports car handling to go with the power. Subaru makes only All Wheel Drive Vehicles including the Forester, Outback, Impreza, Legacy and Baja. So regardless if you are camping in the National Forest or caught in a winter ice storm the Subaru AWD system responds to wheel slippage and redirects power before the driver even knows it is needed. Four-channel, four-sensor Anti Lock Disc Brakes provides full steering control in a panic stop and fully integrates with the automatic All Wheel Drive system. The 2004 Subaru Forester is available with a normally aspirated 165 horsepower 2.5-liter engine or the turbo charged 210 horsepower 2.5 Liter engine. The Forester X without the turbo will range between $21,000 and $25,000 but the 165 horsepower leaves some drivers wanting more. The turbo charged Forester XT starts around $25,000 and can exceed $30,000 in the Premium Package. Styling is unpretentious but tastefully. Monochromatic Java Black Pearl paint accented by a chromed tipped exhaust and functional turbo hood scoop hints at a "tuner" heritage. Easy to maneuver, handle and park the Forrester has ultimate visibility for the driver. Even the frameless door glass makes for a cleaner easier design. My Premium Package test vehicle welcomed me with heated Leather seating surfaces and the largest Moonroof available. An almost convertible feel is achieved with the windows and Moonroof open. The interior was modern, appointed in a pebble grain black design with gray accents. Manual seats had height and lumbar support adjustments. The AM/FM/6-disc CD system included a separate weather band. Safety is an obvious engineering goal with side impact airbags and active head restraints included as standard equipment. The lower center of gravity makes this a very stable and well-behaved vehicle. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2004 Forester their highest ratings for both side and frontal crash testing, as did the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. That's about as good as it gets, when it comes to protecting your family. Before you look at any of the compact sport utility vehicles, take a look at the 2004 Subaru Forester 2.5 XT. You will find performance, safety and utility makes this a very attractive package. Jack Miller Subaru has two locations in the Kansas City metro area.
