It's my belief that children should not go to college in their hometown. It's a time to get out of the house, pack up all that "stuff" and experience life on your own as a freshman at least several hours away from mom and dad. I've made that caravan with both of my daughters and now it's time for others to repeat the journey.

So this fall, Blue Valley Northwest graduate Trey Brown will pack up his things and make his mark away from home at UCLA where his father was a running back for the Bruins. As the former Kansas City Chief and Metro Sports Commentator, Theotis Brown and I reminisced about our children growing up while having lunch recently at the Bristol, I thought of my first trip down to Arkansas to take my daughter to college.

How much nicer the trip would have been in the 2003 Navigator that we were driving courtesy of Bob Sight Lincoln Mercury in Overland Park. One can never over estimate the room needed to transport the belongings a freshman going off to college and the Navigator is just the solution for comfort and space.

While Theotis still loves Chiefs football and keeps up to date with the local action his thoughts will be far away with the Bruins and his son every time they take the field this fall. Is there another vehicle that would be better suited to take on a cross-country vacation than a new Navigator? I think not!

With over 104 cubic inches of cargo room the 2003 Navigator has been redesigned to provide a spacious and luxurious passenger compartment. Rich burled walnut trim beautifully contrasts with satin nickel cabinetry hiding outstanding premium electronics. This elegant but contemporary cabin pampers the driver on errands around town or long trips to see your kids at school.

The ride and handling is very refined with full four wheel independent suspension and sports car type rack and pinion steering. Power from the 300-hp DOHC 5.4-Liter V8 is controlled effortlessly by the four speed automatic transmission and provides excellent response at all speeds.

Heated leather seats are expected of luxury vehicles but heated and cooled seats were available on our test vehicle. The power folding outside mirrors, power running boards, power liftgate and power folding third row seats almost seem necessary on a vehicle of this extraordinary luxury. An incredible integrated premium sound system, rear seat DVD player and touch screen voice activated navigation system makes this one of the most advanced vehicles on the planet.

As Theotis piloted the Navigator into the parking lot of the Bristol at Town Center Plaza in Leawood, Kansas we were at the pinnacle of luxury for lunch. Because the Bristol flies their seafood in fresh everyday they have gained the reputation of one of the finest seafood restaurants in the Midwest and I just had to try the crab cakes.

From the biscuits that melt in your mouth to the excellent menu that changes daily, the ambiance and service of the Bristol is unobtrusive for carrying on conversation. That's why this has become the premier destination for business lunches and dinner in South Johnson County. The bar is classic and comfortable and the dining rooms make you feel as welcome as the smile from all that served our every wish.

But, Theotis and I didn't talk much about the luxury of the Bristol or the incredible seafood I was devouring. We didn't even discuss the outstanding features of the Lincoln Navigator that we just enjoyed. No, rather we talked about more important things, like our children our goals and life.

The Bristol and the Navigator were merely the vehicles enabling our conversation without interruption. Pure luxury is like that. It enhances your lifestyle rather than becoming the focus of your adoration.

The 2003 Navigator allows you to go anywhere and do anything without limits or restrictions. You can take your family of seven to dinner or deliver your child and all their "stuff" to college. If you are caught in a snowstorm while on vacation in Colorado, you have four-wheel drive at your disposal. If your daughter wants a horse, you can tow an 8,000-pound trailer through a muddy arena. The 2003 Lincoln Navigator will let you do this in an environment of pure luxury.

Which will make that trip to visit your child in college a real joy, as long as they move far enough away.
